Employers are now seeking health insurance through wellness programs. To save money many employers are reducing their benefits and having higher costs for employees be insured or covered. In order to reduce health insurance costs, wellness programs are offered to help individuals live a better lifestyle to stay healthy. This will then reduce the overall costs of health care over time.

Wellness programs have been offered for many years, but recently employers are adopting the idea and making an effort towards wellness initiatives. These wellness programs include weight-loss programs, health-risk questionnaires, or medical screenings. There is not an accurate statistic to state whether the wellness programs help and reduce costs, but it is a known face that there is long-term health care cost savings. These savings will be through changing peoples cultures and stressing a healthy lifestyle. As all costs are rising in this economy health care costs are on the rise as well. In order for employers to see results it will take a few years because of the long-term benefits. Costs are proven to be reducing by two to four percent over the course of a few years.

A typical symptom or illness cannot be diagnosed without an annual health screening. With a proper diagnosis individuals can live a healthier lifestyle and have more energy on the job. Therefore, employers will start to see better results, retain employees, and also have successful employees. As an incentive, employers offer gift cards and low premiums. However, it is important that the employer cannot penalize employees for not participating in the wellness programs. Therefore as a result, the government has stepped in and required incentives to be offered for a portion of the employees premium as long as the wellness targets are accomplished and met.
